It was with the 2010 “Hidden Truths” Chardonnay, from Simpatico Ranch, that we first noticed the incredible resilience the wines from this vineyard were capable of. It all began when our San Francisco broker called, his voice dripping with incredulity, to ask how it was that this wine not only survived to day 5, but actually tasted better!?! Since that moment, we have run many an experiment ourselves, tracking the evolution of these wines after being opened. They never disappoint, and we are equally dumbfounded.

So it was with great joy to read The Wine Advocate’s recent review of our 2014 Simpatico Ranch Chardonnay “I just loved this wine and monitored its progress for several days. It is incredibly stable and in fact just got better and better!

This is wine we dreamt of creating upon embarking on our Chardonnay journey. Equally at home with oysters, as it is with bechamel sauces. As unique a Chardonnay as California produces, while remaining uniquely Californian. A significant contribution to the conversation. Do not miss this wine!

Dating back to the 2009 vintage, Simpatico Ranch is now Argot's longest running vineyard partnership. Since then, these vines have done more to expand our thoughts and beliefs on both grape growing and winemaking than any we work with. It is a place we hold a deep attachment to, and take great pride in sourcing fruit from.

Simpatico Ranch lives in the ancient, volcanic crater that is the floor of Bennett Valley. This situation provides the perfect confluence of climate and soil for growing world-class Chardonnay. Affected by two 'gaps' in the coastal ranges—Petaluma and Crane Canyon—cool, maritime air is funneled into the area and pools on the valley floor making Simpatico one of the coldest Chardonnay vineyards in Sonoma County. Further, located at the base of Bennett Mountain, the gentle, south-facing slope and meager, stony soils provide enough challenge to focus the vines on quality over quantity.

Farming on the edge of ripeness and the powerfully positive affect of old vines are two of the most important vineyard characteristics in growing ultra-premium wine grapes. Due to these unique conditions, our grapes are afforded an extra 3-4 weeks on the vine, developing completely unique and highly coveted flavors and complexities. This is why we believe that Simpatico Ranch is as BRILLIANT a place to grow Chardonnay as exists in California.
